Planning and Decision Making

Planning and Decision Making:

Management function that involves defining goals, establishing strategies for achieving those goals and developing plans to integrate and coordinate activities.

Planning is a process consisting of several steps. The process begins with environmental scanning. Planners must then attempt to forecast future conditions.

Planners first establish objectives, then they identify alternative ways for achieving those objectives, formulate necessary steps and ensure effective implementation of plans and finally they constantly evaluate the success of their plans.

Types of Planning:

• Strategic Plans:
Plans that apply to the entire organization , establish the organization’s overall goal and seek to position the organization in terms of its environment. Gloria Jean’s top management most often conducts strategic planning.

• Tactical Plans:
Plans designed to develop relatively concrete and specific means to implement the strategic plan. Middle level Managers often make tactical plans.

• Operational Plans:
Plans that specify how the overall goals are to be achieved.
